Among the Silicon Valley Power 100: Deena Shakir, the venture capitalist who uses her journalism skills now in a different role.

Mark Robson started his company in 1989 with an 84-unit project in Sunnyvale and from the beginning he’s been hands on with everything from site selection to design and focused on building communities that bring people together. “I don’t know any other way,” Robson said. “I like holding things, touching things, being involved in design.

After helping launch President Barack Obama’s first Global Entrepreneurship Summit, she joined Google LLC, working on product partnerships and tech targeted at social impact. She invested at the search giant’s early-stage venture unit, GV, before joining Menlo Park VC firm Lux Capital. She has said because she is the American-born daughter of Iraqi immigrants that it instilled in her a desire to make an impact in her investing.
