A whole way of life could disappear - and some have already vowed to quit

Bacup Market will be redeveloped as part of a £17.9 million funded project from the Government, but traders fear they will be hit with increased rent and that there will not be enough available units for them. The plans include a new market hall, which will include a permanent food area, as well as spaces for traditional market traders, according to Rossendale Borough Council.

Jayde also says some traders have already vowed to retire from the market because they won’t be able to commit to a five-day working week and that some traders have other jobs that they fit around on market days in order to keep up with their home bills. “We will also work hard with the public to encourage them to support our local traders during this time. Future management arrangements, with regard to rent prices and any associated terms and conditions haven’t yet been decided.Jayde said she believes any investment is good for the town and any improvements made are positive.

Chair of the 2040 vision board, Simon Daley, said: “The proposal is a fantastic opportunity for Bacup and the redevelopment will be a new economic engine for the town. It holds the potential to improve the local economy and I am excited by the opportunity. Jayde says that although traders have been told they can use outside space if they don’t use the building, some traders cannot set up their stalls outside due to regulations around food.

Victoria Market: Traders left 'thousands of pounds out of pocket'Nottingham Council says it has been running the market at a loss since 2014. Plenty of smaller empty spaces that the council could lease and place these 30 traders in. Rather than leasing a space that holds 200 traders and is three quarters closed… What’s being done with the old Debenhams? Split it and use a floor for the market, by the… market square?
