West Aurora School District 129 has decided to join schools nationwide in suing social media companies based on claims that using certain apps among public school students is causing anxiety, depression and other mental health issues.

The school board recently approved a resolution stating the “proliferation” and widespread access” of social media among students has “expanded dramatically,” leading to significant health issues and subsequently has caused the district to incur costs in staff time, disciplinary proceedings, emotional and social counseling, medical services and other costs, according to the resolution.

The district will use the same law firm, California-based Franz Law Group APLC, that initiated the lawsuit against Juul.
