It is, I admit, pretty dead at the Coogee Bay Hotel in Sydney when Celeste Barber walks in. It’s a gorgeous winter’s Friday, and yet we have the pub’s restaurant to ourselves.Louise Kennerley, was released. The name of the book echoed Barber’s Instagram career, in which she adopts the poses of celebrities and fashion models , skewering the fashion industry. Hers is a very Australian sense of humour – the first person she makes fun of is always herself.
She loves make-up, she says, as a way to express herself. “Make-up is fun. I remember doing a make-up course when I was little. I love sitting in the chair now, getting my make-up done.”The beauty industry, she notes, is “massive, worth billions – and almost deliberately very confusing. That’s specific, I say. “Yeah, but everything for anyone over 20 is automatically anti-ageing. There’s no make-up. So I wanted make-up to get you out the door, five products that are easy to use. Claire made it happen. She has a business brain and a creative brain.”. “I’ve had success in this space with collaborations, they really resonate with people,” she says. “And I’m very clear about what this brand is.”She is also very clear that Booie is hers and hers alone.
She split the tour into two parts, returning after the first month to see her kids and then doing another stint. “I finished in Chicago and my immediate thought was, ‘I can’t wait to do this at home in Australia.’ It’s the proudest I’ve ever been of one of my shows.”Her Antipodean tour starts in August . Barber certainly keeps a full plate – this year alone she will star in. She has several other projects in development – all this, on top of the beauty business.
“It allowed me to be dramatic, creative, loud,” she says. She trained for 15 years. “I performed at shopping centres, four Winfield Cup Grand Finals. I danced with Tina Turner. Well, me and 40,000 other cheerleaders.”Barber was excited to move to Sydney until a classmate pulled her to one side and said, ‘This isn’t Sydney, you’re in Penrith.’”
Barber’s pizza arrives. “That’s exactly what I feel like,” she sing-songs. She lays a napkin across her lap. “I stole this from the set this morning,” she says, pointing to her grey pinstripe Alex Perry suit . “I hope they realise I’m not giving it back.”
