A Perth man accused of murdering his mother denies killing her, but admits lying to police and family members about fraudulent behaviour.

Andre Rebelo has been on trial for the past month in the WA Supreme Court, accused of murdering his mother in her home in 2020.

Andre Rebelo, 28, stands accused of murdering his mother Colleen in order to benefit from life insurance policies he'd taken out in her name. Mr Rebelo revealed to the court he had seen his mother at her home for a period of about 50 minutes in the late morning on the day she died.His lawyer Anthony Elliott asked Mr Rebelo if he did anything that was "wrong or unlawful"."Lied to my family, including Grace, my siblings, I suppose, many employees of the insurance companies."

He told the court his mother mentioned she had a life insurance policy after she separated from his father.She was "very stressed", he told the court.He asserted his mother was "very conscious of her own health", particularly as she had to deal with Hashimoto's disease, an autoimmune condition affecting the thyroid gland.Mr Rebelo said he also had Hashimoto's, which meant he had to take daily medication and have regular blood tests.
