Major labels are signing an eye-opening number of new artists each year. Music business columnist Tim Ingham breaks down what it all means

) must have grown yet again. Even at its 2017 level, it suggests that the major record companies — across Universal, Sony and Warner — are signing somewhere close to an average of two artists every day., shows that, globally, those same record companies spent $4.1 billion on A&R in the same year. This works out at approximately $11 million per day. Just to run that by you again: $11 million being spent every 24 hours, to sign nearly two artists a day, or more than 50 artists each month.

“I think it’s unfortunate that people don’t always have the time to develop into greatness,” Gerson told theabout record-business A&R in the streaming era. “Everything is just that much faster. Gerson hits on an interesting point: Whose agenda does the profusion of signings that record labels are making every week really serve? One major beneficiary, as she suggests, is streaming services like Spotify and Amazon Music, which are given a fresh menu of megabucks-backed new tracks every seven days, and are able to use this conveyor belt of content to market their own subscription platforms.

The problem is not the quantity is the quality

They definitely aren’t signing trans singers. America’s first award winning trans, never closet case to fame Bralalalala has new albums out with Megadeth drummer, better than Mega says the drummer. Why would a label care about that?

And most of them hem can’t sing at all

It's an insult to the word 'Artist' if you use it for many of the people who have started singing in the last few years

Who is this chick?

Signing to much trash is what they doing anyone with colored hair can get sign

They're signing artists purely to shelve/control in order to maintain the market share of their existing acts.

Yup - the bubble

They haven’t signed me yet so.... not enough🙄

What artists? Come on people, its been at least 3 years since the last time I turned on the radio, last time I did a Kanye song turned me away from modern music.

No... just add more 'artist development aspects' to the structure and function if that is the main argument against...

Yess, and everyone become one hit wonderer

Insert shit between many and artists. Also, quotations around artists.

They’re signing every shit bedroom pop fuck with more than 12 listens on Soundcloud.

Don’t think there’s such a thing in the streaming era as long as you can properly advertise them all to their specific niches

Still no trans singer ..the best albums in hard rock belong to Bralalalala , whose three albums with Megadeth’s drummer have not even been reviewed due to transphobia by labels . Bralalalala is America’s first award winning trans personality as she was never closeted.

99% garbage, nothing worth a shitt after 1989.

Why are you calling people who can’t sing, can’t play instruments, and can barely speak English artists? Where’s the art?

It means there will be a whole lot of one hit wonders

Losing money, no big deal. hire every musician to a bad contact

...a loss of creative control?

They want to profit from trends before they die down.
