All shared public spaces - streets, plazas and parks - will become no-go zones for smokers

Smokers will soon face fines for lighting up on the streets of North Sydney, after the local council backed a proposal to ban smoking in the CBD.

The ban will start with a three-month public awareness campaign to notify residents and workers of the change, before the council starts to put signs up. "A few smokers are unhappy with it but that's always the way when you try to bring about change," Cr Gibson said. "I believe other councils will follow our lead."
