Branch's new fee-free digital checking account makes it one step closer to becoming a serious competitor in the crowded neobank space:

With the launch of its new offering, Branch is one step closer to becoming a serious competitor in the crowded neobank space — but it should continue to bolster its offering with the mobile banking features best suited for gig workers to stand out from the pack.

Providing a solution for a niche audience could allow Branch's service to catch on initially, and doing so through a debit card could enable Branch to monetize through interchange. But achieving scale will require a compelling value proposition, which the fintech can achieve by continuing to build out its offering with some of the above features to distinguish itself from major banks and other fintechs developing similar solutions.
