Here's what you need to know about Unreal Engine, the game development software with 7.5 million users that's caught in the middle of the legal battle between Epic Games and Apple

It's become one of the major standards in the video game industry, used by developers large and small. It's even finding work in Hollywood, with Disney using Unreal Engine to"It's robust," Michael Pachter, analyst at Wedbush Securities, told Business Insider. "It's really popular because it's a really, really good game engine. It's popular because the guys who built those games know how it works.

The case hinges on the removal of the smash-hit "Fortnite" from the iPhone App Store last week, which came after developer Epic added the ability to buy in-game "V-Bucks" at a discount by circumventing Apple's payment systems, and thus its 30% cut of in-app purchases. Epic sued Apple in the aftermath, arguing that the App Store payment scheme is inherently unfair.

In fact, the Unreal Engine itself is based on the technology that Epic used to build the original "Unreal," which at the time set the bar for graphics in PC games, first released in 1998. It provides the tools to build and animate games, including fleshing out realistic 3D graphics of people, animals, and places like city streets or military bases.

"It's a one stop shop to build a game on as opposed to piecing all this stuff together previously," Richter said.Unreal's advantage "Since our games are a very 'movie' kind of experience, I would say the quality of the graphics is really important for us, which is why we are choosing Unreal," Bloober Team CEO Piotr Babieno told Business Insider. "It's one of the most publicly known engines with the highest quality."In 2015, amid mounting competition between the two, Unity and Epic both released their respective game engines for free, in a bid to attract wider bases of developers.
