The declines mean that even though his team expects GDP to grow by as much as 35% in the third quarter, the economy will not immediately return to its previous levels. In the fourth quarter of 2008, corporate profits as measured by operating earnings per share fell by over 100%. However, in this recession, profits fell by 49% in the first quarter, 33% in the second quarter, and maybe 20% in the third quarter, according to Kelly.
"I do think that if you have a Democratic or Republican sweep, you will have a stronger fiscal push next year than if you have a divided government.
