Labor says the need to limit political payments is 'pretty essential' given how much money Clive Palmer is 'putting into the electoral process'. The businessman's mining company handed the National Party $75,000.

The political donation laws allow individuals and organisations to hand over as much cash as they want to as many political parties as they choose.

Kate Griffiths from the Grattan Institute has studied the power of political donors and said more transparency in who provides financial support to parties was needed. "They [donors] have that opportunity to influence because donations do clearly buy access and they've also got the power to influence because major donors are [a] really important source of funds for political parties," she said.

At the moment, political parties only have to disclose donations above $14,000 and Senator Farrell wants that reduced to $1,000.
