A U.S. auto industry group on Monday urged the government to help as it warned the global semiconductor shortage could result in 1.28 million fewer vehicles built this year and disrupt production for another six months.

The U.S. Commerce Department should dedicate a portion of funding in a proposed bill to expand U.S. semiconductor production to auto sector needs, the Alliance for Auto Innovation said in written responses to a government-initiated review.

Some funding should “be used to build new capacity that will support the auto industry and mitigate the risks to the automotive supply chain evidenced by the current chip shortage,” the group’s chief executive, John Bozzella, wrote. The group represents nearly all major automakers with factories in the United States including General Motors Co, Ford Motor Co, Volkswagen AG, Toyota Motor Corp and Hyundai Motor Co.

We should have been ahead of this by manufacturing semiconductors ourselves decades ago.

We used to make hundreds of millions of them here in Vermont. Then, Wall Street sold out to the Saudis, thousands became job-less, and we became beholden to off-shore manufacturers. Thanks IBM ❗

Awwwww... pobrecitos... I'm selling 80% less food than I was just over a year ago, and no governments have come to bail me out... Suck it up, buttercups... If you're not hungry, put your hand back in your pocket...

Well pull some old ones out of the lot you guys got out in the deserts of new cars not sold!

“socialism doesn’t work” until private companies need taxpayer bailouts

no wonder the u.s. bankrupted many companies

Here we go again. Did they came bagging with their private jets!!!

I guess they shouldn't have canceled their orders last year. Pretty short sighted. Now they are crying to the gubbermint for taxpayer money to fix THEIR BAD DECISION. (and pad their stock price)

what the fuck do they want the government to do? They can't just poof semiconductors into existence and Fabrication plants take years and billions to build.

You know Chevy can’t do shit without 9 types of government handouts

So bad news for shareholders of car companies massive win for the planet 🌎 for a few months

But america doesnt make good cars anyhow, waste of money if you ask me

As long as the corporations and monopolies could get their products overseas cheaper they didn't want to make them in America or they could be sure that they would maintain their supply now they're crying.😡

🤣 looks like someone needs China

Maybe just maybe manufacture products in America?

Why haven’t the auto makers worked with American companies that could make and design chips
