Mokwa Central Market in Niger State has been razed by fire, which destroyed commodities estimated at millions of naira.
The paramount ruler of the town, the Ndalile-Mokwa, Mohammed Shaba, said the fire started around 4am on Thursday, adding that more than half of the market was affected. He said, “They called me and I called the fire service. They have been trying to put out the fire, but because of lack of water tanks, the fire is still raging.”“This is a rural market where foodstuffs are sold in abundance. And we are a bridge between the north and the south in terms of food supply. More than half of the market is gone,” the traditional ruler added.
Shaba also stated that four traders who slept in their shops sustained varying degrees of injury and were taken to the Mokwa General Hospital for medical attention.
