Former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern has said there a real danger that Ireland could become semi-detached from the EU single market if the UK Protocol Bill becomes law

Last week, the UK Government tabled a Bill at Westminster that would empower ministers to override much of the contentious post-Brexit trading regime it agreed with the EU in the withdrawal talks. “I shudder to think – and we saw what the delays were in the harbours and other ports two years ago when there were limited checks,” he said. If it was to continue and this Bill was to be passed, if the EU said ‘we can’t get anywhere here, and there has to be checks’, which they will, they ultimately will because they have to protect the integrity of the single market.

“A partnership that is central to the implementation of the Protocol, and not just within this country but with the European Union, which was set out in the agreement,” he added.“In Northern Ireland, Brexit continues to exacerbate political tensions within the Executive and last September north-south co-operation ceased, which effectively means there has been no co-operation on the Good Friday Agreement since last summer.

Meaning, the EU will have no more use for Ireland once the UK is fully out. EU are using N.Ireland and Ireland as a whole as a ploy to keep UK in. Once UK gone, the island of Ireland can go fcuk itself as far as EU concerned

Has he opened up a bank account yet or is he still getting paid by cash? How does that work with his pension? Does he pick it up every week from his local social welfare office? So many questions 🤔

Ahh / go and bé quite man

He means Ireland could get screwed with direct access to the Single Market.

I thought he was under house arrest?

Awesome! Being semi-detached from the EU monetary shit show that is about to appear from Greece and Italy is going to make us V glad we have one foot outside!

Bertie who ? Is this the fellow who got his place done up for free. Didn’t have any recollection of it. The same fellow who never ever had a bank account. This fellow was definitely gone with the fairy’s and makes for an interesting read in the Mahon tribunal report. Disgraceful.
