Can Canada cut emissions without gutting the oil and gas industry? There is no other option

The federal government is ramping up one of its more ambitious – and contentious – efforts to curb Canada’s contribution to global warming: the introduction of new caps on greenhouse gas emissions from the oil and gas sector.

It’s tempting to say that the government should simply tell the oil patch that it has no choice but to do whatever it takes to contribute to meeting Canada’s target of a 40 per cent reduction in total GHG emissions from 2005 levels by 2030. As such, if the industry’s emissions are capped at a level consistent with the national 2030 goal, then significantly reducing production would likely be the only way to meet the targets. That presents a three-headed problem. First, artificially lowering Canadian oil and gas production would impose heavy economic costs on Canada. Second, it might yield few environmental benefits, merely sending customers to other countries – because as long as there is demand, others will provide the supply.

Ottawa has to tune out the most radical voices from both sides of this debate and make a reasonable, fact-based determination about how much of an emissions reduction the industry realistically can be asked to achieve.

🇨🇦 should be a leader of the largest green initiative on the planet, but they are not ... thanks to the incompetent Liberal party of JustinTrudeau

GeraldKutney Same goes for the rest of the world. We have let this filthy industry run our world for far too long already. Time for a serious change.

We need oil for more than fuel. Educate a Liberal, save a life. Military need oil for fuel until we can get HICE as a choice.

Headline is false. Ottawa does not have to push anything... We need Canadian energy.

Lol - the sociopaths in power want 100 MILLION MORE IMMIGRANTS BY 2100, right LPCBC liberal_party CI2100? How are they going to cut emissions with 63 million more people? Lol.

That’s ok we can always follow Germany’s lead and buy our coal gas and oil from Russia

Canada only gives off 1% of all emissions in the world. Why don’t we make other countries do their job first then we will cut once everyone is down to our levels!!!!

The argument that supply of oil and gas must be cut to below demand for oil and gas will kill tens of millions of people in the coming decade. The failure to expand nuclear proves the politicians do not believe global warming is a real threat.

Please prove that there is an emission problem first based on Canada only contributing 1.2% to the world tally?

Cutting emissions is global problem. Why should Canada move in anything but lockstep with its global competitors?

What about Saudi Arabia? Why does the west get all the bad press and pressure to cut emissions? Canada could stop using fossil fuels and it would not account for 1% of global emissions. This is a war on our economy.

Canada oil and GAS industry can cut GLOBAL emissions by facilitating the transition from coal to natural gas. Climatards will destroy us regardless
