Vastly outnumbered by public universities, Australia’s private universities have forged strong links with their students and key industry groups.

Australia’s private universities might be small in number but they have established a niche for themselves in addressing market needs.

“Our programs are designed in consultation with key industry groups and corporate affiliates and are taught by academics who manage teaching with their own successful careers. “Our deliberately different approach to education is powered by personalised learning in small class sizes – our 10 to 1 student-to-teacher ratio is the lowest in the country and facilitates lifelong professional and personal relationships.

Dr Greg Harper, Torrens University pro vice chancellor of business and hospitality, says the United States-owned institution’s real point of difference is its focus on employability, and that comes through a close relationship with industry. Harper says the teaching staff are referred to as pracademics because “they’re practical, applied, industry-experienced academics”.
