Kroger and Albertsons, merging in a $24.6 billion deal, operate nearly 200 stores combined in Dallas-Fort Worth, some within blocks of one another.

That’s because stores often operate close to one another. For instance, in Dallas’ Oak Lawn neighborhood, there are Kroger and Tom Thumb stores less than a half mile apart.

When Tom Thumb and Albertsons merged in 2015, the company kept the stores operating under two different names in Dallas-Fort Worth. Although Albertsons in this region operates under a low-priced model, Tom Thumb has a more upscale feel with nicer stores and more services. Since both companies have rewards programs, apps with digital deals and loyalty cards, expect both to remain, but likely under a combined program.Both Kroger and Albertsons stores have a strong collection of private label products, about 34,000 in all that totaled about $43 billion in sales last year. For Kroger, that includes its Kroger and Private Selection brands, the organic label Simple Truth and the meals-to-go imprint Home Chef.

Kroger makes about 30% of its own store brand products. After the Albertsons merger, the combined company would have 52 manufacturing plants.About 80% of Kroger and Albertsons stores have their own pharmacies, 3,972 in all. Kroger was great but has slid into..OK. Albertsons was awful but has climbed to…OK. Maybe together they can be GOOD to take on HEB.

This is great news for the grocery consumer. Speaking of HEB,they won’t be able to keep up with the great prices that this Kroger Albertson’s will bring the consumer. Plus, HEB ain’t all that.
