A three-story Laura Street building next to Chamblin's Uptown bookstore could be adapted into apartments and retail by 2024.
City officials will weigh a conceptual review for the adaptive reuse of the 225 N Laura St. structure on Thursday. Early plans call for renovating the 6,500 square-foot building to include adding eight apartments total between the second and third floor, while the ground floor would be used for a restaurant space. The work needing to be done is restoration of the exterior façade, an interior build-out and new utility systems, according to a Downtown Development Review Committee agenda.
Records show the property was sold for $890,000 on Sept. 1 to Juliette Balcony LLC, with Rafael and Carmen Godwin registered as the owners. City documents said the owners could begin the project next spring with completion by spring 2024. Robbins Design Studio is the architect and the engineers are Atlantic Engineering Services.
The site is under review by the Jacksonville Historic Preservation Commission for designation as a landmark, the meeting agenda said. The building's original wood frame was built in 1904 and the structure was altered with a ground floor addition in 1923.
