San Francisco officials have backtracked on a policy that would have allowed police to use robots to kill people in extreme cases, multiple outlets have reported.

On Tuesday, the city's Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the amended policy.

The Board of Supervisors is expected to take the final vote on the new policy next week, according to the news outlet. The original policy, which passed an 8-to-3 vote last week, has faced intense backlash from activists and residents. Catherine Connolly, a research manager at the activist group Stop Killer Robots, called the move a"slippery slope" that could distance humans from killing,Dean Preston, a board supervisor who opposed the decision, said:"I'm feeling very grateful to all the community members and civil rights leaders who spoke up and successfully persuaded the board of supervisors to change course...
