World Cup 2022: Gareth Southgate should remain England boss because he has unfinished business - Alan Shearer

'Players appear to like and respect Southgate'

But I really hope he decides to carry on to the next tournament as well, and hopefully he feels he has unfinished business with this exciting young England team. We start the journey to those finals with our first qualifier against Italy in March, in a repeat of last year's final. We should line up with the core of players who have played so well here, and Gareth is still their leader.

I thought France's approach might suit our centre-halves and full-backs, who deal with those sort of deliveries every week, but ultimately that is how the game has been decided, with a wily old fox like Olivier Giroud finding a yard of space in the box.On the plus side, we went toe to toe with the holders and favourites to win this World Cup, played well and created lots of chances. It just wasn't meant to be.

I feel for Harry, but that is the life of a top striker. You always have to put yourself forward for such a huge moment. You can't score with every chance you have, but some chances are bigger and mean more than others, so that one will hurt like hell. The biggest penalty I ever missed was for Newcastle against Sunderland in 2000 - and I still think about it now.

Instead, we are going home, but I am sure the younger members of our team can use this experience to help them the next time we reach this stage.

His time is up he's divided the fans with his politics and knee bending. How many cars and houses did you see with flags on.

Southgate should have been sacked before the World Cup not after

Gareth Southgate is woke liberal left political who has politicised the England footballers to kneel down, support diversity and bringing the nation together. He is unfit to manage England as his job is to win football matches

No no thrice no. We have class players . Should have done better . 4 wins from 11 games is bad

no he should not, they lost 10 games in run up to World Cup, he kept the same strategy for whole tournament, then changed it for France match. tell me what the point was of bringing the subs on , in the last minute of injury time? utterly pointless. he has to stand down

Yep. Penalties HAVE to go in at the crucial moment. It cannot be him jinxing it.

Yeah, he can mow my lawn

He should be sacked for humiliating the players ,

Southgate to remain?

0/3 let’s keep losing

Gareth has built the right foundation, it’s too nice to relax and laid-back. England needed to assert its youth skill, fitness and relentlessness for 90 minutes, they barely broke into a sweat with their tactical waste of time. B S.

Every England manager for the last 50+ years has had unfinished business 🤣😵‍💫

England are failing to capitalise on a huge opportunity to win trophies with the players available for selection at the moment. By keeping the current manager that will continue as he is far too negative in his team selection.

To make sure that the most talented England squad in living memory doesn't make it to the quarter finals next time?

No he should go preach somewhere else all that kneeling they can’t kick a ball

Disagree. Semi-final last World Cup, quarter final this one. Lost the European championship final, relegated in the nations league. I think he’s gone as far as he can.

Then England will never win anything

Yeah I agree. He’s got at least another one or two tournaments in him to crash and burn at against decent opponents. 😂😂😂

Unfinished business of not defeating a top level team in a world cup with the most talented players available in my lifetime and insisting on not playing them. Sure carry on.

😬😅

GS had his chance and squandered it. It is time for change.

Behave yourself…🙄

Wrong yet again.

Anyone with knowledge of football can see this is correct.

Next time, more than any other time next time, we’re still a bag of shite, more than any other shite this time. We couldn’t get it right cos we’re still a bag of shite this time… ad infinitum.

But when will Harry Redknapp be the England manager? He's probably been anticipated as a potential England manager for years now. My BBC link is about Olympus Mons.

And he’s cheap…..

WRONG - next

Gareth Southgate has had enough chances to end his lifelong loosing streak as player and manager, he's done.

He too steady.. lacks the ability to make the big calls and take the risks needed.

Time for a change!

Let Gareth continue, he's revolutionised and revitalised our team and we play lovely football at times. Our time will come.

He has had 3 attempts & has been found wanting 3 times so why does he warrant a 4th attempt, time for someone else to take the reins.

Well in my opinion Kane took the first penalty but someone else should have took the second!

I can remember the days the media would call for the England manager to be sacked for failure.

England players need to learn to shoot penalties. There is no excuse for missing a penalty.

HelenSalmon2 The only reason he should remain is if there's no one better to replace him. Unfinished business is twaddle.

That'll be as far as your going for a good while i recon. Don't blame GS

The problem is that he had ‘unfinished business’ ever since he took over, finishing isn’t their best forte’

The game proved he's not suitable. He has great players, he's not a great manager. Being a nice guy & having favorites clearly never works

elonmusk I realize that you don’t care what I think, at all. As a Covid nurse, I will block all Twitter advertisers, and go out of my way to influence decent people to junk their Teslas.

I’m more of a Black Cat than a Magpie. And thou it pains me to agree with you I take some glee in knowing you’ll never forget the year 2000. Xx

🤦

A lot of patience for a national football manager but not so at club level. Does Gareth's results justify him staying on? Could be that a new national manager could build on Gareth's achievements & help Eng win the world cup finally

He’s had enough time , time to actually win big games , not the games we expect to win , dont wanna hear we played better but lost , it’s a pathetic example to youngsters , nothing wrong with a must win attitude 🤔

All England managers had unfinished business except Alf Ramsey. Time for a fresh start.

Let’s hope so. He’s not beat a top seeded team for about 10 years including the reserve team fielded last night…..😂

There again he plays same team and doesn’t give the rest like grealish a chance

I completely agree 👍

The players let him down

Dodgy knees aren’t good for sports

Unfinished business? Three tournaments, looks at the quality of opposition we've beaten only to fail when we come up against a decnet side. Time to move on.

Kneelers!

Sick of knee Lees!

My neighbour via his stereo has been telling me it's been coming home since 1996. Unfinished business. Must have got lost in the post. Property prices gone up five fold since then.

No he needs to go

Still the question of penalties and no strategy regarding a free kick !

Yeah, he should resign first, lol

Beating a decent team ?

Add him to the long list of England managers that have won nothing at club level or international

3 tournaments he has had now. He has done well no doubt. Is he really the guy the players can look at and think he is gonna win us a trophy? I personally dont think so. England played well yesterday but it felt like France always had another gear in them. They knew they would win

Southgate is the greatest manager in recent years. Has a great team of young players. Some will be there in four years time. In hindsight perhaps another player should have taken penalty. Harry Kane was under immense pressure. I am convinced England would have won the World Cup!

Another yes man who doesn't care if we actually win anything as long as everyone is happy and dancing.

Goes without saying. Of course he should remain.

Shearer is a FOOL! He's just got a soft spot for his team mate from 1996. Croatia have now out performed us in two World Cups in a row. Southgate has won Sweet FA in three major tournaments. With the pool of players we have we should be going further than Croatia! SouthgateOut

I don’t get it, they didn’t progress this tournament. If anything, they relapsed. Went from a semifinal to a final then to the quarters and people are classing that as progress?

BBCNews: Alan Shearer is wrong to keep Garath Southgate on as England Manager. To take a player like James Maddison and not use him and others very disappointing. His time is up SORRY? Creativity at a vital time may have come from these.

And they'll say it again when we go out against the first decent side we play as always

Gareth’s mate think he should keep his job What a surprise

The Manager May decide on tactics but it is the players on the pitch who perform. We did well but France were just that bit better.

Surely he can't make to many more political statements!!! Get up and out!

Problem is he will always have unfinished business.
