A popular Amazon program supporting hundreds of Bay Area nonprofits is coming to an end.

Amazon.com Inc. is ending its AmazonSmile program, which supports thousands of nonprofits globally, on Feb. 20.

"In 2013, we launched AmazonSmile to make it easier for customers to support their favorite charities," Amazon told participants in a recent email."However, after almost a decade, the program has not grown to create the impact that we had originally hoped. AmazonSmile supported hundreds of Bay Area nonprofits, including the Association for Women in Science Inc. in San Mateo, San Jose Dance Theatre, the Epilepsy Foundation of Northern California in Oakland and a Boy Scout troop in Los Gatos. That's in addition to AmazonSmile supporting national nonprofits such as the American Red Cross, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the Humane Society of the United States.
