The Emerald Trail aims to be 30 miles of plants, trees, gardens and trails winding around the urban core/To keep the trail in good shape, Groundwork Jacksonville -- the organization behind the project -- is looking to partner with people who live along the trail, training them for potential future jobs maintaining the parkway.
“The goal of this particular training program is to impact, and possibly change the trajectory, of folks that are living in that urban core region where the Emerald Trail is set to meander,” said Groundwork Jacksonville Program Director Chimere Nieves Pellot. The program is funded with grants from the National Park Service and the Florida Department of Education – Pathways to Career Opportunities. Those accepted into the program will begin at $11 an hour, and can earn up to $13, upon passing a mid-term exam and successfully completing assignments throughout the program. Transportation costs will also be reimbursed.
“We have more interest than anticipated! Right now, we’re looking at a pretty healthy, robust group of 20+ folks, possibly even a couple of dozen interested candidates,” said Nieves Pellot. “We’re open to exploring as many candidates as possible.”
