Freight railroads agree to join a voluntary safety reporting system in the wake of the toxic train derailment in Ohio

[Breaking news update at 3:56 p.m. ET] A federal agency has issued a new advisory urging major freight rail companies “to take immediate safety measures to look at the performance of the protective coverings over the pressure relief valves,” a spokesperson for the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration said Thursday. The advisory, which does not mandate the measures, came as federal investigators probe further into the fiery wreck.

And it can’t happen overnight, you can’t get all this stuff out of here overnight,” DeWine said Wednesday. Crews are expected to begin removing the train tracks this week to clean the hazardous waste under them – a huge task compared to what has been removed so far, officials said.
