Two Iranian navy ships have docked in Cape Town, prompting concerns about the growing list of visitors from countries with questionable human rights records.

Transnet National Ports Authority on Monday confirmed the arrival late last week of the two ships, the IRIS Dena and IRIS Markan. IRIS is the acronym for the Islamic Republic of Iran Ship.

Captain Yael Wearley, Port of Cape Town’s acting harbour master, said TNPA had complied with all standard shipping processes in accommodating the two vessels. However, the visit has already prompted concern among maritime circles, notably from popular maritime website Africa Ports and Ships, which posted pictures of the ships in their latest newsletter.

“Trade, yes, but at what price internationally? There is a very good reason Iran is a pariah state. The continuing attempts at destabilisation of Iraq, Syria, Yemen and Saudi Arabia, using the Sunni-Shia schism as their weapon.

Iran is currently abusing women there and violence against women is the norm.

Questionable only because the USA and NATO says so. Ask if the USA is part of the ICC and ask to elaborate on the answer. To hell WITH them. BRICSIMX.. IMS for Iran, Mexico and Saudi Arabia.. soon we'll add more and drop the Petro-Dollar.. then I want to see the DA pissing.

Prompting concerns from whom and why ……. Where were you when Iran stood n supported us during apartheid. Where were your concerns then

The anc government just can not resist the temptation to side with the worst of the worst ruling countries, like Russia, China, Cuba and Iran. All of these countries have serious human rights atrocities in their daily deeds of selfdestructive and selective governance!

Just because Iran is opposed by an imperialist US, that doesn’t excuse them from flagrant human rights abuses. Enemy of my enemy is my friend = logic fail.

USA also has questionable human rights were white police officers are slaughtering innocent black men. Nothing is done about that. Give Iranians a break!

Preparing for a joint maritime exercise together with Russia, China, North Korea, Venezuela, Cuba and Myanmar? 😉

Questionable human rights record goes to non other than the terrorists called the US

I don't see anything wrong with that

Iran has cheap oil, therefore we must be friends (National Interests) with those who will assist in growing the economy
