University of NSW Professor Hal Pawson specialises in housing policies and said 7,000 new social houses were built in NSW in the decade to 2020.The NSW government said initial briefings show overall social housing stocks under the former Coalition government went down by 300 houses, when sales and demolition are considered.

"It is a way of tackling the problems of places that have become a huge liability for state governments." "Once upon a time we might have thought the lower end of the private market might have been able to accommodate people — more and more that's no longer the case," Mr Engler said.
