In merging with the LIV, PGA critics of the Saudi-backed tour went from 'the right side of history' to conceding that money talks.

Rory McIlroy, a vocal critic of the LIV, once talked about being on"the right side of history" when it comes to the Saudi-backed tour. Now, along with the rest of the PGA, he's thrown in his lot with them whether he likes it or not. When McIlroy proclaimed, way back before LIV Golf even had a name, that he wanted to end up “on the right side of history” when it came to the drama threatening to tear his sport apart, some of us were foolish enough to think that was possible.

Everybody involved looks terrible now. Jay Monahan, the feckless PGA Tour commissioner who had pointed to Saudi Arabia’s record of human-rights abuses while declaring that nobody ever had to apologize for being a member of his organization, has acknowledged as much. And even though the players who stayed on the PGA Tour were understandably outraged by the deal with LIV being arranged without their knowledge — McIlroy told reporters he felt “somewhat like a sacrificial lamb” — they’re now going to have to either walk away from professional golf, or own up to a dose of the same hypocrisy.

To be clear, this does not vindicate Dustin Johnson or Brooks Koepka or any of the other players who made the conscious choice to take Saudi money believing they were leaving the PGA Tour for good. And it certainly shouldn’t clear the conscience of Phil Mickelson, who famously told author Alan Shipnuck that the Saudis are “scary mother to get involved with” and “have a horrible record on human rights” but happily signed up to take their money anyway.
