37 companies granted permits to import sugar FMTNews FMTEng

Local production of 42,000 tonnes a month is sufficient to meet demand, according to the government.

PUTRAJAYA: Thirty-seven companies have been granted approval to import a total of 285,700 tonnes of refined white sugar this year. The domestic trade and cost of living ministry said each importer will be allowed to package the sugar in 1kg packs for retail sale at the current controlled price of RM2.85 per kg and RM2.95 per kg .

The ministry said the local supply of sugar of 42,000 metric tonnes per month by MSM Malaysia and Central Sugars is sufficient to meet the needs of the people, including hawkers and small traders.
