Market,Side Effects,Obesity Drugs

The next wave of obesity drugs could be hitting the market soon.

Drug companies are currently looking into new drugs as Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro continue to rise in popularity.

Researchers are looking to take things a step beyond diabetes and weight loss and focus on improving liver function and reducing some side effects, like muscle loss. Instead of 20-25% of body weight loss, we now see 15-20% but without the significant side effects that some people may experience," said Dr. David Lau, Professor Emeritus at the University of Calgary.Conference, researchers are expected to present data on 27 GLP-1 drugs that are currently in development. Researchers are working to provide cheaper options that have fewer side effects. They say these new drugs would help people feel full, for longer.

You can have similar weight loss but with less nausea and vomiting than you see with some of the other drugs," said C. Michael White, who works in the School of Pharmacy at The University of Connecticut., a few companies developing these experimental drugs released some data ahead of the conference. One drug helped reduce body weight by an average of 8.6% in 16 weeks while another helped lose 15.6% after 48 weeks.
