Carmakers are facing a range of challenges, from slowing demand in China to stricter rules on emissions.

News that Ford plans to close its Bridgend plant next year, with the loss of 1,700 jobs, is just the latest in a series of blows for the UK car industry.

It comes as carmakers around the globe struggle with a range of challenges, while consumers are buying fewer cars. After years of strong growth, global car sales were broadly flat in 2018, largely because of a slump in demand in the world's biggest market, China. Jaguar Land Rover has blamed its poor performance recently on falling Chinese demand, while Ford has pulled plans to sell a Chinese-made Ford Focus in the US because of the impact of trade tariffs.

More challenging, perhaps, is the introduction of tough new CO2 emission standards, designed to tackle global warming, that make it much more expensive to build cars.

You're missing the obvious reason, less people are buying new cars! Depreciation of new cars lose out againt how reliable modern cars are these days. How many cars on the road now with 100k+ miles compared to 20 years ago

Brexit uncertainty must be having quite an impact on this industry too...

You got 4 right but you couldn’t resist the Brexit one could you? Despite the fact that Ford has expressly stated in had NOTHING to do with Brexit. Day of reckoning for the beeb will come.

Start Electric Cars.

The government have helped to destroy the car industry by saying they will get rid of petrol and diesel cars

Still being in the eu I imagine

Lack of charging points for EV, folk don't want to buy fossil fuel vehicles as they will need to buy EV at some point soon anyway....may as well wait til charge points are rolled out better

I will give you one, the EU.

Nobody in their right mind would buy a new car at this time, we are on the cusp of electricity being the mainstream fuel but electric cars are way too expensive to buy, motor manufacturers have to bring the price down to below fossil fuel cars or simply die..

There are too many makes of car all very similar in style, design and use so the spread/choice is great companies have made too many and not sold them some will fall by the wayside naturally it's their fault but they will blame anything and anybody to cover their failings

In Jaguar Land rovers case, it's because they are shit and everyone is wise to this now

This is why PEST analysis is important

reduction in the monies in people's pockets-simples!

Brexit has not been a factor in the decline of car sales this is just shitty BBC playing up TWO main reasons decline in diesel and general world sales - simple.

Bet none of the five are connected with improvement in public transport.

One reason Britain is struggling, it can’t make hard choices anymore.

None of them Brexit

Tommy Robinson , Nigel Farage , old people, ex veterans and Donald Trump.

Cars. Death machines driven by idiots.

1 new cars cost a bloody fortune 2 new cars cost a bloody fortune 3 new cars cost a bloody fortune 4 new cars cost a bloody fortune 5 new cars cost a bloody fortune

1. Brexit 2. Brexit 3. Brexit 4. Brexit 5. Brexit

Don’t tell me, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit and finally Brexit 😂😂😂

How many factories within the rest of the EU are being closed? Just for comparison's sake? They'd obviously be facing the first four issues as well so if the UK is suffering more, perhaps it's that issue that just sneaks a mention at the end...

It's going through a huge period of change, if the British innovative engineers came up with a new kind of engine using future technology then we could become world leaders in car manufacturing again at the moment it is foreign companies who dominate

1 will do, it's called fossil fuels! Electrify their love! Make a soundtrack for the V8 & pipe it into the cabin!

And yet we are still buying the average amount of cars over the course of a whole financial year? I don't think the Industry is struggling. It's failing here because we as a work force are really expensive and often the work we do can be bettered outside of the UK.

Taxes Taxes Taxes Taxes Taxes fixeditforyou

Brexit,Brexit,Brexit,Brexit and Brexit

Austerity. Brexit. Insurance premiums. Lies about emissions. Electric cars.

1. Nobody can afford a car. 2. Nobody can afford a car. 3. Nobody can afford a car. 4. Nobody can afford a car. 5. Nobody can afford a car.

Mg Rover, that was Brexits fault.

At last the truth it’s not brexit it’s that to comply with green laws the cars are too expensive to make or buy and no one has the money for electric cars that there are no chargers no Info on costs expensive parts maintenance etc

1. Brexit 2. Brexit 3. Brexit 4. Trump 5. Brexit
