Comment: Stay in your lane? This week, the Morrison government told companies to keep their noses out of social issues. In picking this fight the government is taking on some of the goliaths of business, writes Elizabeth Knight

A couple of weeks ago Treasurer Josh Frydenberg strayed outside the political bailiwick and into the corporate domain, telling companies to spendThe overwhelming response from big business a strong rebuke - a warning that Canberra should stay in its lane.

Morton lashed business for being seduced by “self-appointed moral guardians” - further evidence of the underlying hostility between big business and the federal government neither of which feel supported by the other.The government thinks big business has not pulled its weight in helping to sell its policies on reducing corporate tax. Business privately thinks Canberra’s environmental policy credentials are poor at best.

Similarly, Qantas’s high profile boss, Alan Joyce, actively promoted same-sex marriage as a means to be seen to be reflecting the views of his workforce and customers. Shareholders are increasingly expecting boards and management to exercise their social licence on everything from the environment to gender to slavery-free supply chains.is now mainstream and mandated by many if not most of the large superannuation funds that dominate the ownership of Australia’s largest and most important companies.

Society is going backwards remember the time when business used to have a say over you and what you were allowed to do depending on whether you were single or married,etc what time you could stay out, or could get a loan, what principles, etc....

yes! we need more WOKE businesses.......to loose money. the majority will buy elsewhere.

Muppet Morrison overstepping the bounds of good sense. Business need to make profits. To turn a $ they require customers. public rejection is fast lane to closing up shop.
