IT is now common knowledge that global business is fast embracing Industry 4.0 technologies. These are the technologies that encompass robotics, artificial intelligence, data science, high-speed computing and advanced biotechnology, just to name the major ones.

Industry experts in the country feel the plan is timely because the country has been trapped in the middle income category for many years now. Productivity has been the biggest obstacle. Our reliance on human-centred business processes has reached its limit. This is where experts admit that machine intelligence may be of help. This is what IR 4.0 is all about.

It is an irony that while we have the world’s largest producer of rare earths outside of China, Lynas, we are not capitalising on the availability of rare earths right on our door step. At the same time, we shout about expanding the nation’s manufacturing base and proclaim that we want to add value to our resources.

A recent move by Mara to seal a collaborative partnership with Lynas is a step in the right direction . At last, the right professionals are now providing leadership at Mara. These are people with the right technical competence and understanding of emerging business opportunities.
