The company will benefit from taking the time to design EVs from the ground up instead of retrofitting batteries into existing gasoline vehicles, Reuss said.

DETROIT — General Motors is working to build out its supply chain for electric vehicles and unlock profitability as it achieves efficiency and scale, company President Mark Reuss said Tuesday.

GM developed the Ultium battery platform used for all of its EVs — except the outgoing Chevrolet Bolt EV and EUV, which are built on GM's previous-generation battery architecture. Ultium offers efficiency, capability, proportion and functionality, Reuss said. The automaker is working to ramp up its output of batteries — its first battery plant with partner LG Energy Solution is operating in Ohio and a second in Tennessee is expected to open this year — as well as the EVs that use them. GM has said it expects to have built 400,000 EVs by the middle of next year, with capacity to make 1 million a year starting in 2025.

GM now plans to bring the Bolt back into production as an Ultium-based vehicle, though it has not disclosed details or timing. Reuss said the decision was made"because [of] the customer response and the popularity of the vehicle."
