China will impose an 80 per cent tariff on Australian barley, in a major escalation of trade tensions between the two countries.

China accused Australian barley producers of dumping barley into its market below value – an accusation Australia denies. Australia’s Trade Minister Simon Birmingham issued a statement saying “Australia is deeply disappointed with China’s decision” and “we reject the basis of this decision and will be assessing the details of the findings while we consider next steps”.

Meanwhile, China has changed its tune on Australia’s call for an independent inquiry into the origins of COVID-19. China’s President Xi Jinping pledged AU$3.1 billion to support the “comprehensive evaluation” of the pandemic and insisted China had “always had an open, transparent and responsible attitude”.

So what.?. Markets for agri-produce fluctuate all the time. Farmers have the chance to plant other crops this spring and sell any spare barley for animal feed. Or start raising animals on the land. Pigs, cattle, sheep, deer, fowl, alpaca etc.

Any Australian who wants to buy a Great Wall needs to remember the word Corona (it’s Japanese)

Let’s put an 80% duty on all purchases that China make in Australia and this goes into the AustralianManufacturing Fund to build factories.

ScottMorrisonMP explain how China is profiting from Covid-19 on the backs of Australians? Start putting your foot down and fight their autocratic leaders!!

There is no hiding from this one.. This is 100% ScottMorrisonMP fault!! To think Dog-Whistling for the sake of realDonaldTrump would never have any possible reprocussion.. What an arrogant Moron!!

The reason for these tariffs is presently unclear and needs to be spelled out by China. Assumptions as to why this tariff was imposed aren't helpful. D_LittleproudMP

China Dummy Spit update: If we're not exporting to China anymore, then China won't need the Port of Darwin will it? We'll take that back for starters.

Take this opp to put a flat 30% tariff on ALL imports (plus 15% flat export incentive) cure unemployment and raise billions for edu, infrastructure, med Phase in over 5 years “Level playing field” is BS invented by polis that never ran a business

Stop producing barley and produce other grain that can be sold elsewhere.

Australia really should adjust Industrial structure. It is pivotal to develop technology ,renewable energy and high value-added products, not just heavily rely on raw material export.

Western countries must know CCP- China better and deeper. Naive policies must be stopped.

How you act when you apparently have nothing to hide. CCP

MarkHiggie1 Let's buy Australian! BuyfromOz

So what are we doing in response? We do need to respond! The only think the Chinese understand is force.

Time for Aussie businesses to diversify or at least charge a risk premium on our products. We need policies to limit our exposure to CCP

GRR, StopBuyingChinaProducts

Or maybe a 2000% price increase to help our economy recover.

Can Australia take China to court? Our barley farmers are not subsidised. It’s time to start to wind down trade with China. The rest of the world must be watching China’s trading behaviour as well.

And USA gets the Barley volumes that Australian farmers loose. How convenient.

Stop selling to them completely there are other buyers for Australian products.

Chinese beer drinkers are going to be fucken mad

apu36618479 There are other countries that will do fair trades.

MarkHiggie1 Beef then Barley. What's next on their agenda? Strap yourselves in and stand by.

Better not to sell to them.

This is peanuts. They owe us $200B over this covid-19 mess.

Stop dealing with communist China.

Outrageous behavior by China.

We need to send a strong message to China..we are not there farm we. We need to follow Trumps lead and bring all manufacturing back to Australia..this should be a wakeup call of how far we have let all that matters be traded offshore.. Its time Australia to stand up

Export Tax on baby formula.

Trade with China is very risky and unpredictable

Well we reverse tariff our selves with high cost energy giving China a further advantage over our industry so why are we fussed about a single commodity?
