Ratepayers in Darebin in Melbourne's north have funded rising WorkCover premiums after the council failed to meet industry standards as an employer.

Darebin's WorkCover employer rating has improved in the current financial year to 0.91, which passes the industry standard. Last month, Fair Work action brought by former Darebin employee Craig Bruckner was settled out of the Federal Court. Australian Services Union organiser David Beckley said the council appeared to have a cultural problem, with a disproportionately high number of staff taking stress leave.
