I'm a criminal justice expert who studies porch piracy — here are my 5 top tricks for keeping your packages from being stolen

to predict between 220 and 262 billion parcels will be shipped annually by 2026. With more and more products being purchased online — food, clothing, electronics, housewares, and more — package theft will likely skyrocket.

As with any crime, prevention is the best policy. The good news is that a few tricks can make you and your belongings tougher prey for pirates. on porch pirates, which we published this year in the journal "Criminal Justice Studies." We examined nearly 70 surveillance videos of package thieves in action, which revealed how they tend to operate. Porch pirates sometimes work in groups, usually with one person serving as the driver or lookout while the other does the nabbing.

We believe the key to prevention lies in diminishing opportunity. It's a fairly straightforward concept: Thieves can't steal what they can't see. In this case, our comprehensive recommendations for consumers and retailers include reducing the amount of time a package is left unattended outside a home or business, and limiting its vulnerability while it is outside. Grab a package as soon as possible once it's been delivered.

If your neighbors aren't so friendly, direct your deliveries to a parcel locker or store that accepts packages. This service is offered by UPS's Access Point, Amazon's Hub, and Parcel Pending, which allows multiple delivery services.
