The hospitality industry has been hit particularly hard by Covid-19, leaving restaurants unable to hire waiters, chefs, and other support staff. The Onion interviewed several restaurant workers to ask why they quit during the pandemic, and this is what they said.

“Food service used to be an industry where workers were compensated well, had access to health benefits, and were treated with dignity. The pandemic changed all that.”“In these conditions, I don’t feel I would have the resources to treat my employees as poorly as I am accustomed to.

”“Someone tipped me 200%, and I retired thinking I’d hit it rich. Unfortunately, the 200% tip was on a $3.80 check.”“I realized I can just clean dishes on my own time at home without dedicating my whole life to the craft.”“Oh, I was just doing that for the summer because my parents wanted me to have a taste of working-class life before I went to Vassar.”

Long hours, low pay, zero free time, rampant substance abuse, inadequate health insurance, zero time for mental health. The culture of the industry is abusive but let's joke about it

davidgura Interesting coincidence. I've just been looking at some Fassbinder films, and in Martha, when she comes back to resume her job after completion of their honeymoon, she learns that, unbeknownst to her, her newly acquired husband had handed in her resignation a good while ago.

Somehow the headline doesn't sound like satire.

How else could I binge-watch Bridgerton?

That way it doesn't seem so hypocritical later when you're living off the surplus value the working class produces.

This line: “Lemme guess. You’ve never been tipped with a Bible verse.” (Poe's Law applies. The best satire has truth in it.)

Spoiled millennials! In my day, I got punched ALL NIGHT LONG, and I LIKED IT. Kids these days don't want to get punched anymore. *boomer sigh*

Covid is widely spread in restaurants, especially in the kitchen, as we know, almost all types of cuisine use pepper, & when the cook is infected with covid, & he sprinkles pepper on the food he is cooking for you, there, it hits the food.

Don't HIRE them. I worked THROUGH this whole thing AND I HAD 'IT'. I TOOK THE RISK and NOW I'm STILL PAYING FOR THEM TO LIVE. Maybe we should just LET THEM STARVE TO DEATH.

I thought this was a satire site?

You gotta really dig deep these days.

Satire and the news are indistinguishable

Honestly this could be a real story just from this tweet. I know people say this all the time but this tweet itself doesn't exaggerate reality at all.
