The European Union was preparing a ban on Russian oil, with possible exemptions for wary countries, as EU energy ministers held crisis talks today on Moscow's demand that foreign buyers pay for gas in roubles or lose their supply. | More:

"Paying rubles through the conversion mechanism managed by the Russian public authorities and a second dedicated account in Gazprombank is a violation of the sanctions and cannot be accepted," EU energy commissioner Kadri Simson told a news conference after a meeting of EU energy ministers in Brussels.

"We have managed to reach a situation where Germany is able to bear an oil embargo," German economy minister Robert Habeck said today.Speaking in Brussels today, Mr Habeck of the ecologist Greens said Germany would back an EU ban, regardless of whether the stoppage was immediate or by the end of the year.

EU countries have paid more than €46 billion to Russia for gas and oil since it invaded Ukraine on 24 February, according to research organisation the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air.

The Russians have doubled there income from energy and China and India to take as much as they can produce . Shipping gas will only cover 10% of the deficit which won’t work . EU energy policy was imbecilic to leave 40% of your energy needs from one country .

Just like we did with the USA.
