Proposed industrial park in St. Johns denied by county commission

Due mainly to concerns over changing the agricultural character of southern St. Johns County, a proposal to develop an industrial park on what was once farmland was recently denied by the county government.

At Tuesday's County Commission meeting, the board voted 4-1 against transmittal to the state, which is one of the early steps in the approval process.is in jeopardy. Shee said he was approached by a land broker on KeHE's behalf within days of him buying the property for $2.9 million. However, commissioners decided not to allow for a change in land use to the county's Comprehensive Plan.

At Tuesday's meeting, a KeHE representative said the company did an"exhaustive" search but could find no other compatible land in the area for its operation. KeHE has about 300 employees and expects to add more.
