As momentum continues to build, this might be the one to take her all the way.I wanted to start with where you were last week, at the Golden Globes. You attended the show as a nominee with your wife and Ryan Murphy gives you this incredibly beautiful tribute on stage, both to who you are as a person and who you are as an artist. Can you bring me into that moment a little bit, and what it felt like?Thank you for the correction.
And thank you. Second of all, I had no idea that Ryan was gonna mention me in his speech. I mean, he was just like, “Hey, make sure, when my presentation happens, that you’re in the room, because I don’t want you to miss it.” I’m like, oh, okay, great. But I just thought he was going to speak on himself like everybody else did when they got up there, but he did not. He used his platform and his time to shine light on others. It’s really indicative of who he is as a person. The selfless part.
One thing he mentioned was that you were told you couldn’t or shouldn’t marry Jessica because of how it might impact your career. Of course you did anyway. Thinking about that moment, in the context of being told those things and having to wrestle with that, how do you look back on that now, especially now that you are having this incredible year in your career?
I’m just a person who does what I want to do. I’ve worked long enough, I’m old enough, I’ve maturated emotionally. I do what I want to do. I wanted to get married and I felt like it would’ve been a disservice for me to live anything other than my truth, come what may. So regardless of the outcome, it would’ve been harder on me to try to hide my life or step away from the life that I wanted, then it would’ve been for me to stand flatfooted in it..
Well, I never feel reluctant when it comes to Ryan. And it was interesting because, just to go back to the previous question, Ryan and I had a conversation very early on when the world found out about Jessica and me being married, and I told him some of the things that I was told and he said, “As long as I’m alive, you’ll have a job. You don’t worry about that.” That’s what the man told me.
