“I do think it makes financial sense because it connects people in a way that's very meaningful to their experience at the restaurants.' — Lauren Bailey, CEO of UpwardProjects, the owner of restaurants Postino and Joyride Tacos phoenix postinowin

Thanks to a push for “Instagrammable moments” in every business from restaurants to retail stores to hotels and even apartment complexes, the clichéd starving artist is eating well in Phoenix these days.

The first mural Parnian created was for State 48 Brewery's downtown Phoenix location. A friend connected her with the owners of the brewery, and she thought they wanted paintings on canvas, because that is what she had done, but the owner told Parnian they wanted an entire wall covered in a mural. She didn’t know exactly how to do that but didn’t want to turn down work.

“A lot of businesses are using artists to help engage the community more and create some buzz around their business and give some spaces like a bit more of a vibe,” said Sid Rhea, an artist from Phoenix, who paints murals, but also does graphic design and works in other mediums. “I have definitely been noticing a lot of murals popping up around town and I think it's awesome. It's really great to see.

Bailey said they didn’t have much money at the time, so they told guests at their other restaurant that if they donated their old cassette tapes, they’d get a gift card. In the Postino Highland location in Scottsdale, Upward created a matchbook wall with thousands of matchbooks from restaurants and bars from across the world including from Windows on the World, the World Trade Center and Studio 54. In Houston, she opened a Postino in a part of town once known to be a place for first-time homebuyers after World War II, so they hung keys on walls.

Blaise Danio, a Phoenix-based artist, has worked on murals and other pieces of art for several local companies, but she also has created paintings for a new United Airlines lounge in Terminal 3 at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and for Best Western. Some restaurant owners just want to have art in their businesses because it is attractive or thought provoking and they believe it will add to the experience they are trying to create for customers.
