Why small businesses should pay attention to a looming SEC rule

Business owners nervous about the Security and Exchange Commission’s proposed rule on greenhouse gas emissions won’t have long to wait. The agency is set to finalize the rule in April.to disclose in their filings information about climate-related risks that could have a material impact on their operations, as well as greenhouse gas emissions.

The so-called “Scope 3” emissions would be required beginning in 2025, according to the proposed rule.decried the proposed rule in a July 20, 2022 letter to the SEC “A lot of public companies are already well ahead of the rule, even just on the climate front,” Olsen said. He added that, even if the SEC rule ultimately did not put pressure on smaller businesses to report emissions, the marketplace is shifting more in that direction.
