CEO Francis deSouza said San Diego-based Illumina can significantly expand the market for Grail's early cancer screening test.

Grail delivered 20,000 tests in the first quarter alone, he noted.

He added that the Grail deal "makes sense" for Illumina because the company can significantly expand the market for the test. "We can accelerate bringing this test to more people ... than Grail can do on their own," deSouza told CNBC.
