Due to higher than anticipated demand, Stage 5 load shedding will be implemented from 16:00 today until midnight on Friday, Eskom said in a statement.
Two days after announcing an improvement to the system after several generating units returned to service at the weekend, Eskom has now announced that Stage 4 load shedding will return on Wednesday afternoon. Stage 4 will start at 16:00 and will last until 05:00 on Thursday. Eskom said it would provide further details later.
Stage 6 load shedding will continue to be implemented over the weekend in order to replenish emergency reserves, Eskom said in a statement on Thursday. "Due to the loss of additional generating units overnight, the extensive use of Open Gas Cycle Turbines and the inability to replenish pumped storage dam levels, Stage 4 load shedding will be implemented at 07:00 this morning until 14:00," the utility said.
Over the past 24 hours, a generating unit each at Duvha, Hendrina, Kendal, Kriel, Matimba and Medupi power stations was returned to service. In the same period, a generation unit each at Arnot and Tutuka power stations was taken out of service due to breakdowns. Eskom said on Sunday that daytime load shedding would continue to be suspended due to"consistent available generation capacity", with Stage 3 kicking in from 16:00 until midnight.
"The expected weather conditions may lead to an increase in faults affecting restoration times," Eskom said."However, Eskom technicians are equipped and will attend to the faults and restore supply as soon as possible." Customers should treat appliances as live even during outages, the statement added.
Stage 3 load shedding will be implemented from 16:00 on Tuesday until midnight, while on Wednesday and Thursday, Stage 1 load shedding will be in force from 05:00 until 16:00, followed by Stage 3 from 16:00 until midnight on both days. In the past 24 hours a unit each at Grootvlei, Kriel and Matla power stations returned to service, but at the same time a unit each at Majuba and Tutuka broke down. There has also been a delay in returning a unit to service at Tutuka.
Stage 3 load shedding will be implemented from 16:00 until midnight. Eskom said it would publish a full update on Wednesday afternoon.Fewer breakdowns, lower planned maintenance, and lower demand are the reasons for the lower stages of load shedding over recent weeks, says Eskom.
