EXCLUSIVE: Outgoing Liberal MP Steven Ciobo has told Sky News he had been thinking of stepping down from politics 'for a while' following a 17-year career in parliament. The Minister for Defence Industry says he felt he'd 'made his contribution', conceding it was never his plan to be in politics for his 'entire life'. 'Politics for me has always been a means and not an end,' Mr Ciobo told Sky News.
He dismissed claims that his role in the deposal of former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull had played a role in his decision to resign, insisting it 'hasn't been a big factor'. Mr Ciobo had initially offered his resignation in August last year after backing fellow Queenslander Peter Dutton in August's leadership spill but it went unaccepted. His resignation comes as another in a spate of Coalition MPs to step down from politics and will be effective immediately.
