He accused Mr Sunak of creating a “rupture” after originally promoting “a Cameroon way of doing things”, saying: “He has instigated a breach with the Cameroon period. And that has come as a bit of a surprise to me and my friends, including to David.” The veteran said: “What on earth is he doing banning smoking? Once you’re an adult, it’s your choice. The A-levels stuff seems such second order stuff too. This is the kind of thing you whack out to a Sunday paper, rather than putting it in a PM’s conference speech.

Sir Keir Starmer hit out at the Prime Minister’s claim to represent “change”, telling ITV News Meridian: “He can’t be the change because he’s been the nodding dog as all the decisions that he now says are terrible were carried through. The change we need is from a Tory government, not more Tory government.”
