Four companies came forward after Medway Council said it could not afford to pay for Christmas lights.

The lights at the Rochester Christmas Market will not be impacted by the council's decisionMedway Council had said it could not afford Christmas lights because of its financial challengesA crowdfunding appeal by a community organisation raised over £13,000 in 24 hoursChristmas lights will be installed in Medway towns this year, despite the council pulling the funding.However, private companies have now come forward to cover the costs.

Council Leader Vince Maple said: “I am incredibly heartened by the generous offer of all four companies. “Our decision to not use taxpayers’ money to fund Christmas lights and switch-on events saves the council £75,000." The Rochester City Centre Forum appeal opened at 23:30 BST 13 October and had reached £13,000 by the following afternoon."Obviously from a commercial perspective the businesses really need Christmas to be successful.
