The latest email scam is capitalising on the tax time rush, with messages that appear to be sent from the Australian Taxation Office landing in inboxes across the country. The email contains a link claiming to take recipients to an official message in the myGov app — but receivers of the fake alert are urged to immediately delete it, and avoid clicking on the link. “You have a message in your mygov inbox. Click to view,” the scam email reads.
Only after clicking the link displayed on it will a final webpage appear, mimicking the myGov login page and prompting recipients to enter their private username and password, details which the scammers will then steal. “In completing the form, victims will be disclosing their username or email and password, granting the scammers access to the myriad services provided by myGov,” Mailguard said. The only truly safe way for MyGov customers to access related services is to type my.gov.
