10 000 people blocked off the M1 in both directions at Smit Street.

The M1 highway has been reopened following earlier blockages by the City of Joburg employees affiliated with the South African Municipal Workers Union .

The workers went on the rampage and barricaded several roads in Braamfontein, affecting some arterial routes in and out of the city including the M1 Highway. They are demanding a wage increase.JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla says the protests have since been neutralised. “The M1 has been reopened for traffic. Public order policing units have been deployed and managed to disperse the protesters and are in the process of completely clearing the roadway for traffic to flow. Traffic in the area remains heavy, with reports of closure on Enock Sontonga Avenue. Motorists are advised to be cautious of any debris on the road.”

Traffic came to a standstill on Johannesburg’s M1 Freeway at Smith Street in Braamfontein on Thursday afternoon. It’s understood the members are dissatisfied following a meeting this morning to address their needs.
