A major audit has warned Australia must continue to invest hundreds of billions of dollars in new infrastructure projects over the next 15 years in order to maintain current living standards.

The report from Infrastructure Australia suggests the government's record spending on new projects will not be enough to ease population pressures.

Data shows that without further investment, the annual cost of road congestion will blow out by almost $20 billion within a decade. The audit also revealed energy prices have risen by 50 per cent since the department's last audit.
