While the typical Australian town might have two or three competing supermarkets, you'd be hard-pressed to find more than one music store. In most cases, finding just one is difficult enough.
Once, merchants such as Allans, Gallin's and Billy Hyde offered customers a diverse range of stores to purchase all range of instruments, sheet music and accessories. But a steady decline in household expenditure on instruments saw the industry begin to falter in the early 2000s. It was saved by Gallin's parent company Australian Music Group, but six years later it too had collapsed into liquidation. The three operated over 50 locations across the country at their peak, all of which are now closed or in private hands.Henry Diltz
